SAA: More unions want to strike after Gordhan’s attempt at wage and severance dispute fails

In support of Numsa’s strike, and in opposition to the view of ANC minister Pravin Gordhan, more unions have indicated that they will join the strike.

The circumstances in which SAA currently finds itself have left the state-controlled entity in unsustainable status, and the entry of Pravin Gordhan has increased the bitterness and power building on both sides.

Gordhan’s attempt to settle the dispute over wages and retrenchments failed, thereby extending the strike, which would mean millions of Rand per day to losses for the already bankrupt entity.

There are apparently insufficient funds to pay the staff at the end of November, and the huge debt burden will not come to an end without a radical intervention.

True to their actions, the unions once again help push the entity further into the abyss with their unrealistic wage demands.

Pravin Gordhan says cash-strapped SAA may have no money for salaries this month

Minister of Public Enterprises Pravin Gordhan has warned that, while two unions at SAA are demanding salary increases for members, the airline might not even be able to pay any salaries at the end of the month.

The minister was speaking at a Parliamentary briefing on Wednesday. The meeting was called for feedback on power utility Eskom, but Gordhan – who met with unions on Tuesday – also made some remarks about SA’s cash-strapped national airline.

The minister said the strike was worsening the airline’s financial crisis. “SAA doesn’t have enough cash to possibly even pay salaries at the end of the month,” he said. “Not only will people not get increases but they might not even get their salaries,” he added.

SAA strike costing R52 million a day and with a bankruptcy record it could mean the end of the entity

More than 3000 workers affiliated with Numsa and Sacca downed tools at SAA on Friday over a wage dispute and plans to cut more than 900 jobs, costing the airline about R52 million a day.

The interim chief financial officer of SAA Deon Fredericks, said the strike was pushing the struggling airline to unsustainable levels. “If this strike continues, we are running the risk of putting SAA out of business,” Fredericks said.

Even though they are working with Mango Airlines to accommodate as many customers travelling on domestic services as possible and refunding passengers their flights or travel with other airlines.

SAA is facing a crippling onslaught by the National Union of Metalworkers of SA (Numsa) and the South African Cabin Crew Association (Sacca). The national air-carrier is threatening the unions with legal action if they fail to retract comments that the safety of passengers cannot be guaranteed.

#ParasiticParastatal – SA Express is just another bottomless pit swallowing taxpayers’ money

It is disturbing to realise that recently another enormous lifeline was quietly given to SA Express while all the attention was on Eskom, the SAA and the SABC. According to the Free Market Foundation, SA Express received a lifeline of R1,24 billion from the government in November last year and was now given government guaranteed financing amounting to R300 million.

It seems that the Free Market Foundation forced SA Express by means of the Promotion of Access to Information Act to disclose its financial statements and managerial account data.

SA Express has become a large hole draining tax money from the fiscus dam and if it continues in this way, it will drain everything until there is nothing left. The ANC will have to realise at some point that the country does not have an inexhaustible source of money and that public enterprises cannot be saved from financial ruin indefinitely.

How is it possible to fly a large aircraft without proper licensing and qualifications – what does it say about SAA?

Trust in SAA is shot completely after it came to light that they entrusted the lives of thousands to a pilot that does not have the required credentials or license. It is understandable when you do not check the documentation of the guy or gal cleaning the offices or making the tea, but REALY….a Pilot?

A senior SAA pilot, William Chandler was forced to step down when it was discovered that he does not possess the proper licensing to fly big aircraft or large distances. This is something he has been doing for more than 20 years under the employment of South African Airways. SAA says it discovered that William Chandler’s pilot license was forged during an investigation into an incident that was reported on a plane he flew.

SAA spokesperson Tladi Tladi says the pilot has been forced to resign from the airline.

Suspended NPA boss hired to clean up SAA’s mess – SAA, who has been bankrupt after years of mismanagement and corruption now wants to make a turnaround – Is it to late?

SAA, bankrupted after years of mismanagement and corruption, has named former prosecutions boss Vusi Pikoli as its chief risk and compliance officer as part of an effort to clean up governance at the airline.

Pikoli is currently an adviser to the state security minister and was suspended as NPA boss by Thabo Mbeki in 2007.

Vusi Pikoli has been appointed by SAA as the head of their risk and compliance department. He is currently the state security adviser to Minister Dipuo Letsatsi-Duba.

Pikoli was suspended by Thabo Mbeki in 2007 due to an insurmountable break in working relationships between him and the Justice Minister.

In 2009, parliament dismissed Pikoli and, according to SAA, the appointment was aimed at strengthening executive management in their work.

Ramaphosa’s government doesn’t have an economic policy. All that’s been forthcoming is a stimulus package, plus two summits.

As the entrails of the era under South Africa’s former president Jacob Zuma continue to be exposed each day before a commission set up to investigate corruption, so the country witnesses the consolidation of the political project spearheaded by the new head of state Cyril Ramaphosa.

But a key piece of the puzzle is missing: Ramaphosa’s government doesn’t have an economic policy. All that’s been forthcoming is a stimulus package, plus two summits – one on jobs, the other on investment. Do these add up to an economic policy?
