Just like a pencil cannot make spelling mistakes of its own accord, a firearm cannot kill of its own accord. In addition, recent parliamentary questions that the FF Plus addressed to the Minister of Police seem to reveal that the police service is to blame for the majority of the illegal firearms and ammunition in the country.

With that in mind, the following question should be asked: What is the purpose of the proposed amnesty period for handing in firearms? According to the government, the purpose is to confiscate illegal firearms so as to combat crime in South Africa.

However, in response to a parliamentary question that the FF Plus posed the Minister a few months ago, he said that approximately 10 million rounds of ammunition were either stolen from or lost by the police service itself over the last six financial years. The police service also lost 4 357 firearms in the same period of time.

Shocking discovery: 108 illegal firearms and 134 round of ammunition seized from Limpopo security companies

A total of 108 firearms and 134 rounds of ammunition were confiscated from 19 closed down security companies in the Thohoyandou Cluster.

LIMPOPO – The operation, which was conducted by a Flash Unit team put together by the Provincial Police Commissioner, Lt Genl Nneke Jim Ledwaba, is aimed at eliminating all the possibilities of criminals accessing these firearms and committing violent crimes, said Police Spokesperson, Col Moatshe Ngoepe.

Review Online reports that during the operation one person was arrested for possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.

Ngoepe said the recovered firearms and ammunition will be destroyed after all procedures have been followed.

The South African Police Service (SAPS) has ‘lost’ more than 9,5 million (9 555 426) rounds of ammunition over the last six financial years. During the same period, 4 357 firearms were also lost.

These shocking figures were revealed in an answer provided by the Minister of Police, Bheki Cele, in response to an official parliamentary question posed by Dr Pieter Groenewald, leader of the FF Plus.

The question to the Minister was what number of firearms and how much ammunition in possession of the police were reported lost or stolen in each province respectively.

The greatest quantity of ammunition that went missing in a single year was in the Eastern Cape where 3,2 million (3 231 406) rounds of ammunition went missing in 2016/2017.

In the North West, 2,2 million (2 247 126) rounds of ammunition went missing during the 2014/2015 financial year according to the Minister’s answer. Last year, the North West province lost nearl

600 illegal aliens have been taken in for verification during police raid in Joburg CBD – Six rifles, six pistols, four shotguns and hundreds of rounds of ammunition seized

Almost a week after the Joburg CBD erupted into chaos, the police stepped up the pressure and continued with raids, confiscating goods from alleged illegal traders on August 7 2019.

Gauteng premier David Makhura has confirmed that at least 600 people were taken in by police on Wednesday to verify whether they are in the country legally.

They were arrested in the Joburg CBD during a search operation. Firearms and counterfeit goods were among the items recovered in various buildings.

“So far over 600 illegal foreign nationals have been taken in for verification of status in the country and criminal records,” tweeted Makhura.

“Six rifles, six pistols, four shotguns and hundreds of [rounds of] various ammunition [have been] seized. Large consignment of counterfeit goods [has been] found in different buildings.”
